Xero

Currently working at Xero as a graduate software engineer where I will be working in different areas of the company to gain experience in different fields.

techtiMe initiAtive

Last summer I worked at TechTime. A company focused on providing service and software for Atlassian apps. The interns and I worked in small ‘squads’ of 3, with a senior developer included, to implement new features into their upcoming EasyTime app.

The technical skills I improved on included coding in React and gaining a lot more experience in JavaScript. I also experienced Java, as a backend, which included RESTful API, and using Atlassian virtual instances. I learnt a lot about Atlassian apps, such as Confluence for documentation, and JIRA and Trello as our Kanban board.

The soft skills I learnt were planning as a group and managing tasks for myself. Being able to communicate with others and even teach skills that you have picked up in the past. As our squad created a new feature from the ground up, it took me through the whole development cycle of a project. This included research, planning, interviewing, designing, developing, and documenting.

Projects

Towards the end of my work, we had an event called ShipIt Day. This is a 24hr opportunity to do whatever you like to help the company. This year there was a focus, which was Team23, an Atlassian event where you show off your latest app to potential customers in Las Vegas. I created two projects for this event and several designs.

Team23 Assets

These are designed using Affinity Designer. For the booths, I used a 3D model to get a true feel of how they would look like. I also designed a shirt, pamphlet, logo, and business card with feedback from the CEO. [Swipe below and click to zoom!]

Worklog finder

A treasure-hunt-esque game, this app boils down to a page that allows users to scan QR codes to collect all the pieces for a prize. I created an open-source design that can be used for a variety of events, then a custom edition that is given the TechTime feel. They will be using this during Team23.

Mock DayView

Made with my coworker, Karl Bennet worked on creating the backend server, allowing a client and server so that phones could connect to the website and create work logs, and the website could display them. I worked on the front end, creating a 3D mockup of the DayView, which is the main screen of the app.

Designs

During my stay, I also spent time outside of work mocking app how many different aspects of TechTime could look like. These included unified app icons, a new website, and a new logo. I am also very proud to say that the face of EasyTime, their new app, is based on my designs.

aWf

AWF is the largest staffing provider and is located all across New Zealand. They provide skilled staff to jobs that require temporary workers.

In 2021, I was a temp worker for AWF. While not digital-related, this job required me to constantly work in new places and immediately do my part.

Some of these roles included: sales assistant for United Flowers, parcel sorting at Toll, and furniture moving. Each of these places required a different set of skills and problem-solving, which I quickly adapted to.
I like to be efficient and stay on top of my tasks and this is shown by having been able to study well and complete all my assignments early while having a part-time job. I work well in a team and am happy to work with others or independently.
